Mid-conversation, Eryka asked, “Should I be paying you for this?”I paused. I had hired Eryka, who is 49, for her coaching four years ago, so we had exchanged money for services before. And if I want to succeed as a freelancer, I can’t always provide free work. Yet when Eryka suggested the possibility that we move from friendly favor to negotiating a payment, I demurred. “And then if you’re a generous person, and it’s natural for you to give, you’re going to want to give it to them.

When Financial Independence Isn’t Always the Goal

In the summer of 1996, when I was 16, some of my friends found jobs at our local mall in Jacksonville, Fla. We all came from upper-middle-class families, so working was about building character and earning spending money, not because of financial necessity. I loved music, so I floated the idea of working at Blockbuster Music, a now-defunct record store, while riding in the car with my mother, an Iranian immigrant. When she heard this, she pulled off the road, parked the car and angrily lectured me. My mother said I should instead pursue internships and other activities that would support my studies and career goals, not distract from them. My Iranian mother’s ideas about the way the world worked often clashed with my American upbringing.

In recent years, I’ve taken over managing my mother’s finances, which will all go to me when she passes. My father has split his assets evenly between me and my half sister. My half sister is 20 years older than me, so I effectively grew up an only child. But I’ve built meaningful friendships throughout my life, and my friends are not just my chosen family. For years, I’ve envisioned leaving all of my assets to my friends.
